Just wanted to thank everyone who made Festival of Quilts such fun.

I am completely shattered and brain dead but loved every minute of FoQ. The best thing was it was meeting all you lovely bloggers and customers, being online can get a little lonely so I sit wondering what everyone is like and you were all as lovely if not lovelier than I imagined.

I also wanted to thank the wonderful, very talented and VERY important ladies at Fat Quarterly who kept me laughing all four days - we have to have stalls near each other next year!

I am now going to sleep for a week!
Only kidding - got orders to do tomorrow :)

DQS10 quilt finished!

Yay! My DQS10 quilt is finished, my partner said she loves Kaffe Fassett prints, so using Kim MacLean as inspiration I came up with this. All went fairly well apart from not reading the instructions for the Steam a Seam! I am really pleased with the end result and DH wants to keep it. Exactly the sort of thing I never would get round to making for myself but I am sure I will receive something absolutely stunning in return. The gals over at DQS10 are such a talented bunch.

Sewn Together Bee December Blocks

Yes, I know I have already posted January's blocks, but I misplaced my December fabric in the Christmas mayhem. KnittinBrit has been very patient while I rooted around and eventually found said fabrics!! They were hiding under hubbie's bedside table of all places! Why I put them there I do not know and probably never will!

I needed to be around the house today so decided to try out my Singer Featherweight, I have had this baby since October but it was supposed to be a Christmas present from hubbie so haven't used it up till now.

I was a little concerned initially when there was a bit of smoke coming out, but it wasn't hot and as I had been rather liberal with the baby oil when I cleaned it I carried on and it was fine! In fact it sewed like a dream, perfect straight stitches and tension and sooooo pretty!

The blocks were nice and straight forward, I don't normally like batiks but the colours with these are so rich and I am very keen on orange and dark purple at the moment that I think they look rather lovely.

Two down, two to go...

I still have another two to do tomorrow but they are quick to put together and should go out in the post by the weekend.

It does seem strange sewing at home after so much time at the studio but it does have the added benefit of my little helper ....

What is it with cats, they just have to put their paws on the fabric and be right in there!

Dog walk, not cat walk!!

This is my youngest who is four and who doesn't seem to grasp the idea of dressing up warm for a long dog walk ... her ambition in life is to be a supermodel. She is super cute though!!

Since getting back from said dog walk we have been subjected to two hours of fashion shows, how can you be so obsessed at the age of four?

Feeling very very low today as I had some really bad news yesterday, to try and cope with the day and get back in the Bee frame of mind I locked myself away in the studio for a few hours and made my blocks for my Sewn Together Bee. I had been sent some gorgeous black white and lime green fabric which was a joy to work with and the blocks were from Oh Franson's tute on Sewmamasew. I thought they would whizz together but they took somewhat longer ... Think they look great though, the finished quilt will look brilliant.

Fabric Warehouse

My main fabric distributor Is just down the road from where my mum lives, so obviously a trip to my mum's means a warehouse visit! My idea of heaven :) The kids and dh were in tow so came in for a nosey too, the owner was great and gave them a charm pack each, fat quarters and some ribbon. I came away with a new fabric line, loads of new Kona Solids colours, rollups etc..

Look what we got :)

Decisions, decisions......

The new fabric range I have got in is Carmen by Anna Griffin, I love it and will put it up on the website once it arrives next week.

Next week I am planning to visit Oakshott Fabrics and Makower/Andover Fabrics so much more to come!!

Couple of Christmas quilts

Sorry these are so badly photographed, been waiting for the weather to improve but now we seem to have thick fog, certainly no good for photography!

Lap quilt for my mum

It is actually pretty blues and greens! lol x

We are visiting my mum tomorrow and hopefully she will like it!, I made it to go with a hexagon pillow I made last year.

I made two of these Christmas quilts with a Kate Spain - 12 Days of Christmas layer cake. They were very very quick to put together and I sold one! The other has been brightening our living room this Christmas!

I made so much other stuff before Christmas, purses, make up bags, brooches, coasters and sold them or gifted them without documenting - duh!! I will photograph the train quilt I made for my ds when the weather improves, it is too big to do indoors and the lighting is atrocious!

We are still in the midst of it all here but life will get back to normal next week and i will post properly and catch up.

Amazing I have amassed a staff of 10 in my first six months of trading!!! A really good night was had by all.

Craft Fairs - busy busy busy

Sorry I have been neglecting my blog recently, but this time of year is soooo busy!! So many kids things, snow and making stuff for a couple of craft fairs I have been taking part in. Yesterday was the School Christmas Bonanza, pretty low key and great fun. The kids sang, loads of people came and chatted and I sold a few Christmas decorations, purses brooches etc. Today I can get on with Christmas present stuff, got two quilts to finish off and a massive bolt of wadding turned up yesterday so I can get on - YAY!! I will be adding the wadding to the shop shortly.

I have been promised there won't be this sort of delay again - but many many apologies to those of you who have been waiting.

No quilting been going on here but I am finally on the mend, the last couple of days I have been feeling well enough to sit up in bed and make Christmas ornaments, which I love doing so here are a few piccies...

These little birds are from Fa la la la Felt by Amanda Carestio, I have actually made 15 of them (not all in the last two days)! Really fun and easy to make and a great book. I am planning on making loads more from this book.

The bell is also from this book, but I made my own template as wasn't near a photocopier to enlarge the ones in the back of the book.

The gingerbread men were kind of adapted from a Tilda pattern from her Crafting Christmas Gifts book - another goodie, I am a sucker for Christmas decoration books!

These are from an Indygo Junction pattern from last year, but I just love making them - they take hours but are worth it!

Tomorrow I'm of to Harrogate to the Knitting and Stitching Show with Lynne from Lilysquilts - very excited!!

Is anyone else going? If so let me know and we could meet for coffee x We got free tickets to see Gok Wan which should be fun and maybe we'll pick up some styling advice! I will be sussing out whether to do a stall there next year, I am already doing the Festival of Quilts next year, but more on that in another post.

Jessica - Quilthappie is making a quilt for her sister, these are her favourite colours and then she wanted just a small splash of red thrown in as her sister loves rubies. I think these colours just sing!

I was originally going to to double wedding ring using my Go! Cutter, but the block would have worked out way to big, so I cut out the shapes using my cutter then did a bit of curved piecing around them. I am really pleased with the end results and am definitely going to do a solids double wedding ring quilt - watch this space

What have I been up to...

First, here is the block I have made for the lovely Melissa from Ardea's Nest for the QATB Swap. We have each chosen a theme, and Melissa's is birds, I could do what ever I liked around that theme! I decided to do some brightly coloured little tweeties - aren't they cute!

They are raw edge appliqued and then heavily quilted around.

Here is the back.

This is the lovely block that Melissa did for me, my theme is teacups! Thank you Melissa!

I received this lovely mini-quilt from Sasikirana in the Savvy Seasons swap on Flickr. It has gone straight up on the wall in my studio even though it's not Christmas yet! I love it :) She also sent a lovely sparkly blue Christmas FQ for my stash - just got to decide what to make with it! Thank you!

Dresden Plate Tutorial - Accuquilt Go! Cutter

I have been using my wonderful Accuquilt Go! Cutter now for a while and I must say it is fantastic and a real time saver. I used the Dresden Plate cutter for the Bee Mental Flickr group and the results were stunning - perfect blocks every time. So here is a tutorial for using this die.

Step 1. - Mark your die.

This helps with your fabric placement and minimises waste. Use a Sharpie or other permanent marker and carefully draw on the foam where the blades are placed. Be careful not to press too hard and damage yourself or your pen! Learn from my mistake and leave to dry before cutting out fabric!! I raced ahead and some pen transferred on my fabric!

2. Choose your design
With the Dresden Plate die you get two different choices, rounded or pointed edges - which of course gives you the third option of alternating them. I decided to go for pointed edges.

3. Fabric choice
The die cuts four pieces - you will need twenty for a full plate, so for good variety choose five different fabrics. The Go! Cutter will cut through six layers, so will easily cut through your five fabrics and a whole plate is done in one go! Choose another fabric for your centre circle and you are almost ready to roll!
Carefully place your fabrics on the die, your pen marks will show you where to place and how much fabric to use.

Step 4. Rock and Roll
Simply place the cutting mat on top of the fabric and die and roll your fabric through the Go! Cutter using the handle. The cutter works for right and left handed quilters so just do what is easiest for you. To lengthen the life of your cutting mat make sure you alternate sides and direction each time you cut.

Step 5. Fabric ready to sew.
Your fabric can now be removed and is ready to sew! It's that easy!

Step 6. Preparing your points.
Fold each piece right sides together, make a good crease as you will need this later, then sew a quarter inch seam across the top.

All these can be run through one after the other and your will end up will a lovely pile of pieces.

Step 7. Trim threads and snip corners.
The heading says it all, trim all loose threads and snip the corner on the folded edge to make it easier to turn your point.

Step 8. Turn and press
Turn your point the right way, use your crease line from earlier to make sure your point is even. Prod with a stick or other such item to get a nice sharp point and press.

Step 9. Centre Circle
Take your two circles and place right sides together and sew a quarter inch seam all the way round.

Step 10. Snip and turn.
Cut small snips around the outside and make a cut through the centre of one side.

Turn and Press.

Step 11. Layout and sew together
Choose the order and sew your pieces together using a quarter inch seam, pressing after each seam. I stuck to batches of five which makes this easily manageable.

Then make up your halves

Complete your plate and press.

Step 12. Appliqué
I machine appliquéd my plate to my base fabric using a running stitch, although you could use zig zag or hand appliqué for a neat finish. Simply pin your plate on to your fabric and stitch around the edge, then starch and press and attach your centre circle. Again I machine attached my centre as this also secured the centre of the plate to the base fabric.

There you have it - a very quick and easy Dresden Plate block thank you to the amazing Accuquilt Go! Cutter!

Bee Mental Blocks Finished!!

Nearly finished everything on my todo list! Yay!!

I had run out of Kona Snow in the shop and couldn't finish my Bee Mental blocks, but it came in late yesterday afternoon, so this morning I set to finishing the blocks. I feel I can pack now, big weight lifted. I am going to cut back on swaps for a few months - DH is getting ratty with me, because everything I seem to be sewing is for someone else! I just have to finish my blocks for Melissa's QATB Art Block Swap, and then back to just monthly bees - DSQ10 is tempting me though!

Now all these dresden's are finished I can write my tutorial for them, for the Go! Cutter and then that means giveaway!!

Well, I am starting to get there, i have since moved my sewing machine, Go! Cutter, gadgets, notions etc down but still need to sort out the fireplace and put some quilts on the wall! I will keep some of Lewis' paintings up because I love them despite him telling me that he wanted to build a wall between our spaces! He said he feels like he is painting in someones living room! I am trying very hard not to take it personally!

I seem to have outgrown the house, there is fabric everywhere! The solution? A dedicated sewing studio and fabric store!

My lovely husband has come to my rescue, he is an artist and has a large studio in a converted barn just down the road from us, half of which he wasn't really using and he has generously handed it over to me!! Here it is after most of the junk has been moved out, just in need of decorating and girlyfying!

Since the photo I have painted and bought shelving, rug etc and with post with my progress tomorrow.

I would much rather have spent the day with my sewing machine, but instead I spent it watching Derby County. The children's school had free tickets so off I went, dutiful mother, to the football in a car with 4 chulren and my friend Jo. I actually rather enjoyed it! Derby won 5 - 0 against Crystal
Palace and it was very exciting.

I have been playing some more with the wonderful Go! Cutter. It just amazes me how quickly I can cut up an entire block in just one Go! for a Dresden Plate block.

You simply choose 6 fabrics, place them on the cutter and roll them through!

I will post a tutorial tomorrow showing just how easy it is.

I am so excited! I have been chosen as one of the first bloggers in the UK to review the wonderful AccuQuilt GO! Cutter!!! You know what this means - I will be hosting a giveaway for one of my wonderful followers to receive their very own cutter, keep checking in for news.

This wonderful piece of kit turned up a couple of days ago and I have been busy testing and playing.

The dies I chose to test are Dresden Plate, Hexagons and Double Wedding Ring. I am doing Dresden Plate as my block for Bee Mental on Flickr and above is my first attempt with the GO! It was sooo easy and quick to use, all my pieces were cut in one roll of the cutter and they all fit together beautifully. Today is my first day I can dedicate to the cutter so I will have a good play and post more later.

My husband is an artist and he had been invited to exhibit his work in an Alumni Exhibition celebrating 125 Years of Birmingham Instititue of Art and Design at Margaret Street. Last night was the private view so Lewis and I went and met up with a couple of friends including our bezzie mate Pete who was responsible for introducing us over 20 years ago! We hadn't been back to Margaret Street for 18 years so it was a real trip down memory lane.

Festival of Quilts Part Two & Holiday Project

I am away on my family holiday in Cornwall at the moment with no sewing machine! What is a girl to do? English Paper Piecing of course! While I was at the Festival of Quilts I was given a Moda Jelly Roll - French General - Rue de Jardin, not my usual choice but very pretty and ideal to take away and perfect to EPP with.

The pattern I have decided to do was inspired by some of the quilts I saw at the Festival and also has a Christmassy feel to it.

I will put it together with some Kona Snow as a Christmas Quilt - seems a bit strange to be working towards Christmas while on the beach!

The stars are made up of diamonds and triangles into that wonderful hexagon shape, the amazing 60 degree angle! I can get four stars with four strips and am averaging a star a day - hmmm may take a while as I doubt I will keep that up when reunited with my machine!

What an amazing day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was in heaven!

Just look who I managed to get my photo taken with!!! The fabulous Amy Butler! She was so lovely, I felt rather in awe of her. I was fortunate enough to go to her talk, which was both sickening and inspiring. Amy showed how she goes about bringing out a new line, and what she and her team get up to. She has an amazing studio and beautiful set home/office which she uses for all her photos, which her husband takes. Someone asked how she got started and she told us how she moved from an illustrating career with producing patterns in her spare time to how the fabric and patterns took over and now keep her, her husband and a team of 10 extremely busy.

The Rowan stand looked beautiful, with loads of Kaffe Fassett, Amy Butler and a few other Free Spirit fabrics. I didn't manage to speak to Kaffe Fassett but did catch a picture of him.

One of the most interesting things at the Festival was getting a good look at a the Go! fabric Cutter by Accuquilt. I have seen these on several American Blogs and they look amazing! I spent ages at their stand chatting with their rep and getting a good look at it in action. She demonstrated how easy it was to cut up jelly roll strips 6 layers at a time, and how to cut out applique shapes. Within seconds she had cut out flowers and a vase - just stunning.

I so so so want one!!! What an amazing tool.

In general I was a bit disappointed in the fabrics, there was very little Modern Designer Fabric and I didn't really buy very much, but it was just wonderful to be surrounded by fabric every way I looked and gadgets and notions.

I met up with the lovely Paula Ozier at her stand and bought some of her gorgeous Elephant fabric. I was lucky to get some as she was selling out of it. We went for a coffee and I managed to talk her into letting me stock some of her fabric!

I also bought some beautiful Echino fabric, which was also few and far between at the show.

Other than that I tried out several long arm quilters and frames. They were such fun and I would love to have taken one home with me, but alas they have a huge price tag and take up too much space, maybe one day.

I will post again in a bit about some of my favourite quilts from the show.

Trip to Bristol and Classic American Quilt Exhibition

Warning - this post contains an awful lot of pictures!

This weekend I took the kids down to Bristol to visit my dad and stepmother, we had an amazing time despite the awful weather! This weekend the Balloon Fiesta is on and on Friday we strolled over the Clifton suspension bridge to watch 100 balloons take off.

I had a play with the hipstamatic app on my iphone, who takes pretty cool pictures!

We haven't actually gone back in time!

At the fiesta Jamie had fun in one of these ...

We sat for a while and watched five balloons inflate,

and deflate again :(

But never mind we had fun at the fun fair, and five balloons was still pretty cool.

On Saturday my dad and Suzanne took the kids off and I went to Bath for the day to go see the Classic American Quilt Exhibition at the American Museum. Unfortunately I couldn't take any pictures so here are a couple from the book, they haven't come out very well so I won't post too many.

The exhibition was fantastic as were their quilts on general display, there were several Amish quilts (see below) and one Gees Bend, some stunning log cabins (see above) and they were all beautifully displayed. I was disappointed not to see more slave quilts, in fact there was very little about slavery in the museum at all. Years ago I had seen an exhibition of slave quilts in Atlanta, which was amazing and this what had inspired and interested me in quilting in the first place.

I managed to spend four hours at the museum including quite a while in the shop!

I picked up some cute things, some of which will be going to my swap partner in the Modern Swappers swap.

On the way back to Bristol I happened to note a fabric shop - oh what a shocker!

They had some lovely Nicey Jane so I had to buy some for my stash...

I am now on a fabric diet!! Except for my shop of course! Hmm, actually the diet starts after the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham next week!

Step two of Karrie-Lyne's Charm Pack Quilt Along finished!! I am now all caught up, roll on step 3!

I am taking part in Karrie-Lyne's Charm Pack Quilt Along, and step one was preparing half square triangles. Not a few but 150 of them!! Not only did they all need stitching together but they all needed squaring up. Now this is a step I usually skip, being one for fast results, but Karrie-Lyne is far more of a perfectionist than me and I think this quilt will be perfect because of it. I shall take not and try and make sure I square up properly in future!

These are just a few of the off-cuts, it took me four days to complete this step so most got thrown away.

As part of the Modern Swappers swap we had to make a decorative gift for our swappee plus a functional sewing gift. So far I have made a pillow (decorative), pin cushion and needle case (functional). Just a couple more bits to finish and some yummy fabric and I am ready to go!

I have been in a hand sewing mood so have gone for hexes, pentagon and hand foundation piecing. What fun!

I am hoping to get some more done this evening so more piccies to follow.

New in this week, scrap bags...

Moda Scrap Bags consist of colour coordinated 100% cotton selvage strips from various Moda fabric lines. Each bag is approximately 1/2 lb. of fabric, and will come packaged in a paper bag as shown. Each bag contains varying width of strips, most are from approx. 2" to 4" in width. Strips vary in length, most are 30 inches or longer. Each bags' strips are color coordinated fabrics with appox 30-40 strips depending on the exact width and length of the strips.

Catching up on my bees

I actually got to do some sewing last night and today and have been catching up on my July bee commitments.

Firstly my block for Karrie-Lynn - Fresh Modern Bee.
We had to choose a half square triangle block for the sampler quilt she is creating. It took me forever to choose a block, then decide on my colour layout, but got there eventually and I think it has come together quite well. The fabrics were Make Life by Sweetwater for Moda which are gorgeous, so I needed to them justice.

Next I finished my blocks for the Sewn Together Bee, July is Hollie's month and she is making a quilt for her fiancée so she has chosen "manly" fabrics! I started these blocks on Saturday but had a bad sewing day and couldn't finish them. My zig zag was puckering and no matter what I did I couldn't sort the tension, I ended up tinkering with my sewing machine and in a foul mood! Yesterday was far more successful and I finished them really quickly.

Now I just need to finish my swaps and I can sew something for me. I recently got City Quilts and Cherri's Tempest pattern and am dying to have a go with some of my solids from the shop. City Quilts is a fabulous book, I would highly recommend it!

It has been a glorious day today so I sat outside finishing off my binding. I love this stage of a quilt and find the final hand stitching so relaxing. So here it is...

Kona Medium Gray.

The back is pieced with some of the offcuts.

And bound with the Timber stripe.
I have got a new supply of Timber coming in the next couple of days in the Fuschia colour way, what shall I make to show that off! It is fun having a shop!!!

I had a really productive day yesterday and made a whole quilt top!!!

I have been wanting to make a New Wave quilt since first seeing the design by Oh Fransson and cut into some Timber and Medium Gray Kona from my shop. I know it is really to sell but I love it so! I am so pleased with it, so so pretty.

I have launched a new fabric store - Simply Solids!!

I was finding it hard to get hold of the Kona Solids colours that I wanted so decided to bite the bullet and open my own store.

This is the stock I am opening with but I can stock any of the 221 Kona Solids range and if you want a particular colour I can get it in within a few days!
